What is the right sign for me?

In order to find out what kind of sign will suit your needs the best, we need to firstly establish what the purpose of the sign will be and what kind of message you will be sending to the public. Further questions that we would ask are whether you want your sign to be applied indoors or outdoors, whether it will take on a temporary promotional role or a permanent branding solution and is lighting required and would you like your sign to feature internal or external illumination. Pinning down all these questions helps us to better understand your needs and allows us to give you the best possible suggestions as to what will enhance and improve your business or sales campaign.

What materials can be used to make my sign?

The materials that can be used to make your sign are nearly endless, and include: acrylics, composite materials, aluminium, steel, wood and various other metals and plastics.

Will my sign require any maintenance?

The answer to this question is reliant on various factors such as the location of your sign, the type of sign and whether it has lighting elements or not. In general however, all signs should have a basic maintenance schedule, where some might simply require a light cleaning with household detergents, while others might require re-lamping or rewiring. To ensure that your sign retains its looks and functions properly, you should have maintenance scheduled at regular intervals throughout a year.

What will the lifespan of my sign be?

Location and quality of materials are the two biggest deciding factors on how long your sign will last and of course if you make use of regular maintenance opportunities. In general, your sign should last around ten years with regular maintenance and some companies and businesses even opt for a full replacing of their sign every five years.

Do I need my neighbours’ permission to erect an advertising sign on my property or building?

This depends on where your business is located, and whether you need to access a space belonging to the neighbouring business in order to construction, installation and maintenance of your sign. To determine whether you need your neighbours’ permission to erect and install your sign, you should check in with your local municipality as there are rules and regulations that apply to the use of outdoor signage.

What is architectural signage?

Architectural signage is high quality hand and machine crafted signage, generally made from metal but does include the use of glass, hardwoods, various special finishes and usually has a single overall design form and structure. Ranging from Built up lettering made from various metals including metal plates, flat metal lettering and way-finding signage. These can be made through various processes including CNC routing and bending of acrylics. LED lighting is the preferred illumination solution for architectural signage.

What is corporate signage?

Corporate signage is generally considered as signs that are in or around a site that is not a retail environment. The signage tends to be quite large scale and the types of signage that is generally used are also found in both the retail and architectural areas of the sign industry. An example of corporate signage would be a “Monolith sign” which is characterised by their large pillars that display company names and logos in-between the pillars. They are commonly found at the entrances of business complexes in and around industrial areas etc.

What is retail signage?

Retail signage varies greatly in quality and impact. It is generally signage that is at the front of any high street shop ranging from small local stores to national and global chains. They can be made from a variety of materials and incorporate parts from both the architectural signage and corporate signage areas of the industry.

What materials can be used in the construction of my sign?

We have the ability to use many different types of materials, from extruded plastics, acrylics, glass, wood, co-polymers, aluminium, steel and composite materials. Materials are available in various different colours and finishes.

What fonts can i choose from?

We have an extensive archive of fonts to choose from, allowing you to specify the font style. Assignment3 can suggest what would best suit your company style and we can also recreate old artwork designs.

Can you replicate our corporate identity?

Yes! We can replicate your corporate identity and we can even follow any guidelines provided for the use of branding and logo's. By supplying us with an EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) file for example, our design department can recreate your corporate identity turning it into your new sign solution.

What will the final product look like?

Upon confirmation of order we can provide you with a photographic representation proposal of your sign.

Can I use copyrighted images and logos on my sign?

Yes, but you will need to seek permission from the owner first.

Will my sign require planning permission?

Generally all illuminated signs visible from the road will require advertisement consent from your local council. The planning consent you may be able to attain will depend on whether you are located in a conservation area or a listed building for example. The variety of signage consent you may be able to get will be reduced or come with provisions. If you are concerned about these issues, please speak with one of our representatives or your local council development department.

When installing a lightbox, do I need to get an electrician to connect the box?

By law an electrician has to connect it as the insurance companies requires that a qualified electrician does the electrical work. Should a fire arise due to an electrical fire, you may lose your insurance claim.

How long will it take to manufacture my sign?

Our manufacturing time under normal circumstances is 7-10 working days and may extend to 10 – 15 working days during busy periods. For particularly large projects or urgent projects a mutually agreed time frame can be organised. All time line estimations are from receipt of an agreed deposit or purchase order.

What quality controls do you have in place?

We utilize an in-house control system, with inter-departmental checks ensuring that all signs are manufactured to the highest standard. All our signs are manufactured following a stern business practice.

Will my sign have a guarantee?

Our signs are completed to the highest possible standard and are currently supplied with a 1 year guarantee from the date of the completion of the installation.

Will my sign require any maintenance?

Most signs generally should have some maintenance schedule. Depending on the type of sign this can range from just a light wipe over to a thorough cleaning. Maintenance should be carried out at regular intervals throughout the year. If in doubt about your maintenance requirements please do not hesitate to contact us and we can provide this as an after-sales service on your new or existing sign. We also offer an emergency callout service for any neon breakdowns and most callouts are completed within 72 hours.

What is the life span of my sign?

The life span of a sign is determined by a number of factors, these are the location, quality of the materials used and maintenance schedule for the sign after installation. Generally you should expect a sign to last around 10 years with regular maintenance however many companies will replace their signage every five years to keep the image looking clean and up to date.

Do you provide any other services?

Assignment3 is more than just a sign manufacturer. We can offer you the complete sign service from brand management and design through to installation and maintenance.

Can you do the design of a logo?

We have eight dedicated designers which range from graphic to industrial designers. Between them they have well over a 100 years of design experience and have helped build some big brands in South Africa

What kind of deposit do you require?

We require 50% down on all orders with the rest due at pickup or installation.

If I bring my logo on a disk / CD, what format works best?

Depending on your needs and the design of the sign, many formats are viable. The best format is a vectored EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) or an AI (Adobe Illustrator) file. We will work with you for the best format for your sign.

Can you make a sign from a digital photograph?

Yes, definitely! The better the quality of the photograph, the better your digital image will turn out! Check out some samples under our products listing.

I see many vehicles that are completely covered in advertising. Can Assignment3 provide this service?

Yes. This depends on you! There is a vehicle graphic design to fit in every budget. The best thing to do is have one of our designers measure your vehicle and develop a proof and price.

If I have special colour-matching requirements, or need to have my letterhead and business cards matched can Assignment 3 meet my needs?

Yes. Depending on the type of sign and its uses, we can match according to your needs. Colours tend to differ depending on what kind of materials that they are applied to, but Assignment3 can assist in finding the best material and colour to suit your needs.

Can my sign be delivered?

Yes, we can deliver your signs for a small fee.

What is the largest sign I could order from Assignment 3?

There are no signs too large for us! From enormous road-side billboards to large channel lettering and lightboxes – Assignment3 can deliver signs of epic proportions.
